THOUGHTS FROM JACKIE: Meaning of the Crowns

Revelation 4:9 And when the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, to Him who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders will fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and will worship Him who lives forever and ever, and will cast their crowns before the throne, saying, 11 “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” NASB

In the Bible we have various kinds of crowns mentioned. These crowns are given to the people of God for their faithfulness. Here are some examples of our crowns. Psalm 103:4(crown of lovingkindness and tender mercies), 2 Timothy 4:7-9(a crown of righteousness is waiting for us), James 1:12(a crown of life for those who love the Lord), I Peter 5:1-5(The Chief Shepherd will give you a crown of glory for good leadership).

The scene in Revelation 4:10-11 has 24 elders casting down the crowns they have received. They are declaring Jesus is more worthy, as creator, of reward than they are. The widely accepted view is the elders represent the saints of God. Here is just a snippet of information to support this view. Twelve of the elders represent the Old Testaments twelve tribes. Twelve representing the New Testaments apostles with all twenty four having obtained crowns. If your study bares this out then you too accept that they represent us in our actions after receiving our crowns. The entire beginning of chapter four is explaining this scene as a continual form of worship not a single event (Rev. 4:8). Furthermore, in Revelation 19:11-13 we have a scene where Jesus is now wearing multiple crowns. This description occurs after we have arrived in Heaven to celebrate the Marriage Supper. This means we have also received our crowns to cast down at His wonderful, glorious feet just as the elders have done. The beauty in all of this is no matter what we do our awesome God is more worthy of reward than we could ever be. Glory and honor to the name of Jesus.
