THOUGHTS FOR JACKIE: “Beyond the Shame”

THOUGHTS FOR JACKIE: “Beyond the Shame”

Let’s be clear that feeling ashamed of something, and feeling condemned are two different things. Shame is a feeling associated with knowing you have engaged in foolish behavior. Condemnation is feeling like you can never be forgiven for foolish behavior. When the Bible says we are ashamed of past behavior it means we have remorse for what we recognize to have been acts against God. It is true that as a practicer of many sinful behaviors, we were at one time condemned. Once we realized the foolishness of our disobedient sin, we became ashamed in a way that lead to repentance. When we asked God’s forgiveness it was granted, and the condemnation was removed. So as the Message Bible says about your past life: “But do you call that a free life? What did you get out of it? Nothing you’re proud of now. Where did it get you? A dead end.” We are no longer slaves to sin. Sin and shame do not rule our lives. You are free and forgiven. Live like it. If the devil has been holding your past over your head, end that today. Listen to scripture. Listen to your reborn spirit. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:20-23
20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. 21 And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom. 22 But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. NLT

Romans 6:20-23
20-21 As long as you did what you felt like doing, ignoring God, you didn’t have to bother with right thinking or right living, or right anything for that matter. But do you call that a free life? What did you get out of it? Nothing you’re proud of now. Where did it get you? A dead end.

22-23 But now that you’ve found you don’t have to listen to sin tell you what to do, and have discovered the delight of listening to God telling you, what a surprise! A whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way! Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master. TMB
