THOUGHTS FROM JACKIE: “$20”

THOUGHTS FROM JACKIE: “$20”

Donald Trump & Ben Carson have come out against Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill. They said Hamilton did a lot of great things for our country and should be left right where he is. Trump called the change political correctness. Carson said Jackson is the last president that did away with all national debt. Sometimes I don’t know if being a historian is a blessing or not, but people really need to read before they speak. One of the reasons our country struggles is our opposite views of history due to a lack of research or denial. While we can attribute the birth of the Democratic Party in large part to Andrew Jackson, he also gets credit for being a slave owner and The Trail of Tears. Being part Cherokee, there’s a strong possibility based on where they settled, that I had family on that forced march. Some people look at Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill with much pride. Many Of the original indigenous nations of this land see him as a murderer of the innocent for profit. He implemented the Indian Removal Act of 1830 in the most vicious of ways. Major General Winfield Scott commanded 7,000 soldiers used to remove Cherokee Indians from THEIR HOMES in North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and my family’s home state of Alabama. Children on the Trail of Tears were given blankets with smallpox. This method and others were used to reduce the population once the final destination was reached. Many of the elderly died on the winter Trail as well. Of the 18,000 forced from their homes, 4,000 would die as the Act was carried out. A good portion of the 4,000 dead perished in the stockades that housed all 18,000 prior to the forced march. Jackson called it a treaty, but Cherokee called it Nunna-da-ul-tsun-yi. This means the place where they cried or The Trail of Tears. In my opinion, I’m only interested in the truth. While it will be great to see Harriet Tubman honored, that’s not my strongest reason for this discourse. I’m tired of vicious ungodly men being called heroes by the uninformed, or those who wish to ignore the pain evil men have caused. Finally, Donald, I can’t help you but wish I could bring you back from your way of thinking. I do realize your way of thinking will shift again tomorrow. Ben, oh Ben, I’m assuming you lost your card along time ago. After your support of Hamilton, I’m going to seek the removal of the cards of any Black folks that support your sell out behavior. As I’ve said before and will continue to say, we cannot ever reach harmony while leaving the truth hidden. Much Luv!
