THOUGHTS FROM JACKIE: “With a Sword in Hand”

The Lord is pleased with his people, and he gives victory to those who are humble. All of you faithful people, praise our glorious Lord! Celebrate and worship. Praise God with songs on your lips and a sword in your hand. Psalm 149:4-6

These verses almost seem contradictory. Your being told that God gives those submitted to Him victory, but you are told to praise while carrying a sword. Is there something strange here? Why am I still holding a sword if God is giving the victory. Many people believe if God is on the scene He will always do the fighting. While there are cases where this is true it isn’t always going to be this way. Although God has declared victory for you in advance it doesn’t mean you don’t have a part to play. The book of Joshua is a prime example of how God teaches us to fight and win. The first challenge Israel faced was Jericho. The promised land was already promised by God. In order to build Israel’s confidence it only took praise for the first battle to be won. Almost every inch of the rest of the land came through battle. Victory was assured, but one of the lessons was that although you have to fight for your dreams God is with you. There’s a greater appreciation for sure when work is involved in achievement. What happens, however, on a deeper level is a greater understanding of God’s hand on your life. Seeing Him work out one thing after another as you move towards your destiny builds a stronger relationship. Again, remember that as far as God is concerned He sees your dreams, goals, and godly desires fulfilled. Pick up your sword with confidence and fight for what is already yours.
