WHY AND HOW SHOULD I READ THE BIBLE?
2Timothy 3:16-17

Intro: General thoughts
Johann Tetzel- Preacher and salesman of papal indulgences for Pope Leo X.
The Ninety-Five Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences (Latin: Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis indulgentiaru), commonly known as The Ninety-Five Theses, were written by Martin Luther in 1517
1-“Sola Scriptura,” or Scripture Alone: This affirms the Biblical doctrine that the Bible alone is the sole authority for all matters of faith and practice. Scripture and Scripture alone is the standard by which all teachings and doctrines of the church must be measured. As Martin Luther so eloquently stated when asked to recant on his teachings, “Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason – I do not accept the authority of the popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other – my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. God help me. Amen.”

WHAT IS THE BIBLE?
John1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything
made that was made.
4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. KJV

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth.
2 The earth was empty, a formless mass cloaked in darkness.
And the Spirit of God was hovering over its surface.
3 ¶ Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. NLT

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we
beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)full of
grace and truth. (Consistency of Word) KJV

I. YOU SHOULD READ THE BIBLE BECAUSE IT IS A GUIDE
II Ti 3:16 Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or
another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our
mistakes, training us to live God’s way.
17 Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks
God has for us. TMB

Statement: The Word is God’s mind in print form

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and
sharper than any two–edged sword, piercing even to the division
of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of
the thoughts and intents of the heart. NKJV

Statement: The Word has the ability to change you.

II. YOU SHOULD READ THE BIBLE BECAUSE IT WILL BRAIN WASH YOU
Is. 55:7 Let the people turn from their wicked deeds. Let them banish
from their minds the very thought of doing wrong! Let them turn to the
LORD that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he
will abundantly pardon.
8 “My thoughts are completely different from yours,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways
higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. NLT

I Cor2:16 “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may
instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ. NIV
Phil. 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus KJV

I. PRINCIPLES OF TITHING
1. Genesis 2:16-17(Adams tree tithe)
2. Genesis 4:1-8(Cain & Able’s tithe)
3. Genesis 8:20-21(Noah’s clean beast tithe)
4. Genesis 14:18-23(Abram’s tithe)
18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High.
19 And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;
20 And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all.
21 ¶ Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.”
22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,
23 “that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’ ––

5. Genesis 28:20-22(Jacob’s tithe)
6. Hebrews 7:1-8(There’s still a High Priest receiving our tithes)
1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,”
3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.
4 Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.
5 And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham;
6 but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
7 Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better.
8 Here mortal men receive tithes, but there he receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives.

7. Hebrews 7:25(Jesus takes your tithes & intercedes for you)
25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

II. THE PRICIPLES OF GIVING
1. II Corinthians 9:6-10(proper motivation=prosperity)
6 ¶ But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.
9 As it is written: “He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” {#Ps 112:9}
10 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness,

2. Philippians 4:10-19(God will supply the supplier)
10 ¶ But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity.
11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:
12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress.
15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only.
16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities.
17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account.
18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet–smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.
19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

II. COMBINING THE TWO (TITHE & OFFERING)
1. Malachi 3:7-10(live under an open window)
7 ¶ Yet from the days of your fathers You have gone away from My ordinances And have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” Says the LORD of hosts. “But you said, ‘In what way shall we return?’
8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings.
9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation.
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.

HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM
&
THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT

Genesis 2:7
7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

Ruach HaKodesh: literally “breath” or “wind”) in various combinations is used often, and the adjective kodesh (“holy”) is also used often. The noun ruach, much like the English word breath, can mean either wind or some invisible moving force (“spirit”).

John 20:19-22(they believed & received the ruach ha-kodesh)
Hebrew: רוח הקודש, “holy spirit” also transliterated ruah ha-qodesh
19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:13 (salvation= sealed with the H.S.)
13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,

Mention- 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
Romans 8:11 (If Spirit that raised Christ)
11 The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as he raised Christ from the dead, he will give life to your mortal body by this same Spirit living within you.

Matthew 11:11(we are greater than O.T. patriarchs/Expound)
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Statement: Even though John receives high encomium from Jesus we are living at a higher level. The Spirit now lives on the inside instead of doing a work and leaving.

Acts 1:1-8 (Jesus promised more power/Jesus promised a baptism)
1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. 3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God. 4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

Stern’s translation begins: “Dear Theophilos: In the first book, I wrote about everything Yeshua set out to do and teach, until the day when, after giving instructions through the Ruach HaKodesh to the emissaries whom he had chosen, he was taken up into heaven. After his death he showed himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. During a period of forty days they saw him, and he spoke with them about the Kingdom of God. At one of these gatherings, he instructed them not to leave Yerushalayim but to wait for “what the Father promised, which you heard about from me. For Yochanan used to immerse people in water; but in a few days, you will be immersed in the Ruach HaKodesh!” (Acts 1:1-5).

John 3:34(Jesus had unlimited power)
34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.

John 14:12-14(should know you have unlimited power)
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Acts 2:1-4 (baptism in Spirit with tongues is the witness)
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

Luke 11:9-13 (He promised He would give you Himself)
9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened. 11 Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12 Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

Ephesians 3:20
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM (evidenced by speaking in tongues)
John the Baptist said that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit. Through the blood of Jesus the way is provided for the third part of God to live in man again. Jesus said that the heavenly Father would give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him. When we accept Christ He breaths on us and we receive the Spirit of God giving us the power to live holy. There was however additional power promised to every believer for the purpose of signs wonders and a higher level of communication with God.
John 20:22, Acts 1:8, Acts 2:4, Acts 3:1-8, Acts 8:14-17,
Acts 19:1-6, **Romans 8:26-28, Jude 20

HOW TO RECEIVE THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
You may wish to have Spirit filled Christians lay hands on you as Paul did in Acts 19:6 to the twelve believers at Ephesus, or you may wish to wait upon the Lord as the 120 did on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2, or just listen as Cornelius did in Acts 10:44-46. Praise God for His variety!

Raise your hands to the Lord, close your eyes and let your mind dwell on Jesus. Be happy in Jesus, as you ask the Father in heaven for what He has promised you. Start praising His name. Raise your voice to Him. He will not force you to speak in tongues. As the Lord places a strange word in your mind, speak it out boldly. Your lips may stammer but as you boldly repeat the word, the Spirit will give you more words. Sometimes only a few words come initially, but as you continue to speak forth in faith the Lord will give you a complete vocabulary with which to praise
God.

Desire your own Pentecost
1 Corinthians 14:1
14 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

IV. WHAT ARE THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT?
A listing of the gifts of the Spirit is found in
I Corinthians 12:1-13. We will now explore the names and functions of the 9 gifts of the Spirit. It should first be mentioned that these are not the same as the fruit of the Spirit which can be found listed in Galatians 5:22-23.

1. The Word of Wisdom: The Word of Wisdom is information given directly by the Spirit to solve a problem. The Spirit of God will use you to speak the exact words Jesus would speak. The Spirit calls the gift forth from within you. You then speak the divine answer to settle the issue.

2. The Word of Knowledge: The gift of The Word of Knowledge gives information and direction. This gift works along with the Word of Wisdom. The Spirit sends this gift when your information is insufficient for the situation you face. If there are hidden facts knowing what to do may be difficult. The Spirit will reveal hidden information, thereby showing you how things really are and not just as they appear to be. The Word of Wisdom may then come to speak the problem solving answer.

3. The Gift of Faith: The Gift of Faith is a deeper form of faith from day to day faith. This gift is sent by the Spirit at times when it is necessary to supernaturally remove all doubt or uncertainty from your heart and replace it with the very faith of Jesus. It creates an inner knowing to the point that you can only see the outcome the Word has said about the situation.

4. The Gifts of Healing: This gift is mentioned in plural form because God does not limit Himself to one form of healing. Christ came to heal us spirit, soul, and body therefore Jesus not only heals us in a variety of physical ways but also He heals the whole man Luke 4:18. The gifts of healing are born out of compassion for the sick which Jesus is an example of Matthew 14:14.

5. Working of Miracles: It is a glimpse into God’s unlimited power. The purpose of the miracle is to settle an issue. If people question the power of God He will manifest Himself in a way that removes all doubt that He is present. This gift is the most sovereign of all the nine gifts because we are less able to duplicate or influence it.

6. The Gift of Prophecy: The gift of prophecy is usually a spontaneous statement about the future. Whether short or long it is born out of something the person already knows. The true purpose of the gift of prophecy is given in
I Corinthians 14:3.
#1 Prophecy is given to strengthen the inner man (to lift him up). #2 It is given to exhort or urge. #3 Prophecy is given for comfort. God sends us a futuristic word to let us know all will be well or that judgment will be due if there is no change. Most prophetic utterances confirm more than direct. All prophecy must be confirmed.

7. Discerning of Spirits: This gift is often called the gift of discernment and is mistakenly considered as a gift from God for the purpose of discerning the faults and moods of others. The real gift is the supernatural power of the Spirit of God that comes to identify whether or not you are dealing with the Spirit of God or an evil spirit. It comes also to help you determine if you are dealing with an angel or a demon.
Luke 13:11

8. The Gift of Tongues: This is not to be confused with our prayer language in tongues Jude 20, Ephesians 6:18. The Gift of Tongues differs from our prayer language because interpretation will go forth after the word is given. In a group setting God may use this gift as a way of breaking up fallow ground so that His Word can flow freely.

9. Interpretation of Tongues: The Interpretation of Tongues is what makes the Gift of tongues effective. This gift can manifest in the form of prophecy or as a Word of encouragement. It is always done in decency and order in the House of God.
I Corinthians 14

Statement: Never say that you have a specific gift of the Spirit. You may have manifestation in one gift more than another: However all of The Gifts of The Spirit are available to every believer as the Spirit wills to express them.

CONCLUSION:
2 Timothy 1:6
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

WHERE WERE THE NINE
Luke 17:11-19
(A lesson in Gratitude)

Introduction: Read Text- Luke 17:11-19 We are going to walk through this story verse by verse so that we can see what Jesus meant by His statement “Where are the Nine”

Illustration- “A little boy was asked by his father to say grace at the table. While the rest of the family waited, the little guy eyed every dish of food his mother had prepared. After the examination, he bowed his head and honestly prayed, ‘Lord, I don’t like the looks of it, but I thank you for it, and I’ll eat it anyway. Amen.’”

Statement: God desires that in all that He does for us that we are grateful. Just like anyone else, our Heavenly Father desires to be appreciated. Let’s get started

WHERE WERE THE NINE
v.11-12 Read & Expound
Note- Leprosy was a slow progressive terminal skin disease. Lepers where isolated to prevent the disease from spreading. The lepers stood far off because they were considered to be unclean. In fact, when entering any public area they had to announce themselves by saying “Unclean, Unclean!” repeatedly.

v.13-14 Read & Expound
Jesus then and now is always willing to help us. Outside of
the miraculous, there was no cure for leprosy.
1. John 15:7(He promised to bless the faithful)
John 14:14(ask in His name)
3. I John 5:14-15(when we pray scripture we pray His will)

v.15-16 Read & Expound
Only one leper came back to say thanks– but look at his level
of gratitude. He did not whisper, he was loud. His state of
mind was not centered on what others might think but rather
on letting God know that he was grateful. He realized God
had done for him what he could not do for himself.
Psalm 103:1(all that is within me bless His name)

Note- Verse 16 mentions that the grateful man was a Samaritan. Even though we know from verse 11 that Jesus was traveling through Samaria, it is significant that this man was a Samaritan. Jews and Samaritans did not like each other. In fact, the shortest route between Galilee and Judea was through Samaria but the Jews would walk around Samaria instead of going through it in order to avoid the Samaritans. The Samaritans, because of their rich soil, became so prosperous that they stopped being grateful. They also allowed pagan beliefs to infect their lands which led to many prophets strongly condemning Samaria. So therefore not only was this man an outcast because he was a leper, he was also an outcast because he was a Samaritan.

v.17-19 Read & Expound
Jesus asks the question “If 10 were cleansed then where are
the nine”. He calls the Samaritan a stranger, foreigner, etc…
In other words, He is saying that those who are accustomed to being close to God and should better understand Him need to be expressing the most gratitude. Jesus tells the Samaritan that his faith has made him whole. The word whole can be translated “saved you”. It appears that Jesus gave this man something the other nine did not receive. While they all experienced physical healing, this man received eternity.

Audience Participation Have a few individuals in one sentence say what they are grateful for.

CONCLUSION- Prayer

SPEAKING PEACE
Mark 4:36-39

Intro: Lyrics “Wonderful Peace” We are to desire peace/ we must pursue peace
I Peter 3:10-11
10 For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit.
11 Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.

Peace: freedom from disagreement or quarrels; harmony; concord
an undisturbed state of mind; absence of mental conflict; serenity: in full
peace of mind.

Mark 4:36-39 (Jesus is our example)
36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.
37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.
38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. NKJV

I. WHAT COMES OUT OF YOUR MOUTH IS CRITICAL
Matthew 12:43-37
34 “Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Expound
35 “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart {NU–Text and M–Text omit of his heart.} brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.
36 “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.

Reference: James 3:1-18 (para)
1 ¶ My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. {condemnation: or, judgment}
2 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! {a matter: or, wood}
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. {course: Gr. wheel}
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: {kind: Gr. nature} {mankind: Gr. nature of man}
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? {place: or, hole}
12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
13 ¶ Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. {sensual: or, natural}
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. {confusion: Gr. tumult, or, unquietness}
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. {partiality: or, wrangling}
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

Proverbs 4:20-22 (words are health to the flesh)
20 ¶ My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings.
21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.

III. HOW TO SPEAKING PEACE
Ecclesiastes 12:9-11 (words spoken in faith are goads/cattle prods)
9 And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs.
10 The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright––words of truth.
11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars {Literally masters of assemblies} are like well–driven nails, given by one Shepherd.

Statement- Find out what the Word says on a subject and apply the
Word in faith. Joshua 1:8

Example- Speaking Peace to your Finances
Proverbs 6:30-31(the devil is a thief so this principle applies)
30 People do not despise a thief If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.
31 Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold; He may have to give up all the substance of his house.

John 10:10
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Deuteronomy 8:18
18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Luke 6:38
38‘Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed, and shaken, and running over, they shall give into your bosom; for with that measure with which ye measure, it shall be measured to you again.’

CONCLUSION: Prayer

FASTING I
Isaiah 58:1-14

INTRO: You should consult your physician before entering a fast. 100s of churches fast during the 1st of the year. My goal is to make sure there is some good information out there.

PURPOSE OF FASTING: It is not so that you can merit God’s favor which you already have. It is so that you can get focused & build your faith to a point that you realize how much favor you posses. As every hunger pain reminds you to pray it increases your intimacy with God. As intimacy increases you believe more & more that all things are possible. Your spiritual ears can hear God’s voice better because you are purposing to hear from Him. Your not convincing Jesus he is #1 in your life, you are making it a reality for you.
Isaiah 58:1-14(being in position to fast)

TYPES OF FASTS: A Total Fast/Supernatural Fast (No food or water) this fast should not last for more than 3 or 4 days unless divinely appointed by God to last longer. Limited Fast (fruit juices & water) This fast can last for up to 40 days. It should be noted that after the 3rd day hunger dissipates. A Partial Fast/Daniel Fast (fruits & vegetables only) Daniel did this fast for 3 weeks but it can easily last longer.
SACRIFICES: T.V., Sweets, Video Games, Shopping, etc.

O.T. EXAMPLES

3 And in every province where the king’s command and decree arrived, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes. NKJV
16 “Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!”
17 So Mordecai went his way and did according to all that Esther commanded him. NKJV
5:2-3
2 So it was, when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, that she found favor in his sight, and the king held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. Then Esther went near and touched the top of the scepter.

Daniel 10:1-14
1 During Cyrus’ third year as king of Persia, Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, received a vision about a great war. It was a true message that Daniel understood.
2 At that time I, Daniel, had been very sad for three weeks.3 I did not eat any fancy food or meat, or drink any wine, or use any perfumed oil for three weeks.
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, I was standing beside the great Tigris River.5 While standing there, I looked up and saw a man dressed in linen clothes with a belt of fine gold wrapped around his waist.6 His body was like shiny yellow quartz. His face was bright like lightning, and his eyes were like fire. His arms and legs were shiny like polished bronze, and his voice sounded like the roar of a crowd.
7 I, Daniel, was the only person who saw the vision. The men with me did not see it, because they were so frightened that they ran away and hid.8 So I was left alone, watching this great vision. I lost my strength, my face turned white like a dead person, and I was helpless.9 Then I heard the man in the vision speaking. As I listened, I fell into a deep sleep with my face on the ground.
10 Then a hand touched me and set me on my hands and knees. I was so afraid that I was shaking.11 The man in the vision said to me, “Daniel, God loves you very much. Think carefully about the words I will speak to you, and stand up, because I have been sent to you.” When he said this, I stood up, but I was still shaking.
12 Then the man said to me, “Daniel, do not be afraid. Some time ago you decided to get understanding and to humble yourself before your God. Since that time God has listened to you, and I have come because of your prayers. 13 But the prince of Persia has been fighting against me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the most important angels, came to help me, because I had been left there with the king of Persia.14 Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people, because the vision is about a time in the future.” NCV

RESULTS:
Illus. Rusty Nelson said that when he traces back many major moves of God at the Rock Family Worship Center here in Huntsville, fasting was involved.
Illus. In my life so many times multiplied miracles came at the close of times of fasting. Personal financial breakthroughs. Healings, Words of Wisdom & Knowledge. All at the close of a fast. Direction for my family, & ministry. There is just something about tuning in to God.

N.T. EXAMPLES Matthew 4:1-3 (Jesus prepared Himself) 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” NASB

Illus. “Bishop Charles Harrison Mason” He fasted 40 days & 40 nights in modern xs (organs dried together/ time in the hospital). He is the founder of the C.O.G.I.C. Many miracles are attributed to his ministry (flies in the tent, wheel chairs on church wall, etc.).

THINGS TO KNOW Acts 23:12-14 (wrong fasting/para story)
12 And when it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. 13 Now there were more than forty who had formed this conspiracy. 14 They came to the chief priests and elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great oath that we will eat nothing until we have killed Paul. NKJV

Matthew 6:16-18
16Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.17But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; 18That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. KJV

CONCLUSION:
Matthew 17:20-21
20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” NKJV
